Tech News: Globe Telecom Supports MozillaPH Roadshow

mozilla_firefox_horizontal_jpg_large_2000x784

http://www.mozillaph.org

Leading telecommunications provider Globe Telecom gives its support to MozillaPH, a Mozilla-supported community initiative in the country which is set to conduct a roadshow on August 22 to promote HTML5 technologies and to showcase the upcoming FirefoxOS, an open-source mobile operating system for mobile and tablet devices.

With the new FirefoxOS, developers can easily create cross-browser applications for the web and portable devices such as smartphones and tablets using HTML5, a markup language for structuring and presenting web content. With HTML5, developers would be able to handle multimedia and graphical content on the web without having to resort to proprietary plug-ins and platform-specific application programming interfaces (APIs). This means more opportunities to create stimulating and interactive websites as well as better and more powerful applications.

“Globe Labs is always in a lookout for innovations in the mobile space in view of advancements in the delivery of mobile products and services. Thus, we continuously engage the IT community by offering various trainings and workshops and entering into partnerships with third-party developers and communities such as MozillaPH which hold similar activities,” said Anne Michelle Santos, Developer Relations Manager of Globe Labs.

She added: “In fact, we have been in partnership with MozillaPH on various project initiatives since 2009. This way, we are able to provide a venue for interested parties to develop their own apps and bring them to market.”

Globe Labs, which was launched by Globe in 2008, is an innovative community composed of dynamic and vibrant IT professionals, students and business managers, with primarily focus on mobile and future technologies which can be later on deployed to the market.

On the other hand, Robert Reyes, MozillaPH Regional Localization leader said: “We are grateful to be working with Globe Labs in promoting openness, innovation and opportunity in the mobile space. We are very excited to do a roadshow for FirefoxOS to teach, support, and inspire as much people as we can so that they can develop something better suited to the Philippine market.”

Tech News: The Firefox OS -- Booting to the Web (formerly known as Boot to Gecko / B2G)

mozilla_firefox_horizontal_jpg_large_2000x784

http://www.mozillaph.org

Mozilla believes that the web can displace proprietary, single-vendor stacks for application development. To make open web technologies a better basis for future applications on mobile and desktop alike, we need to keep pushing the envelope of the web to include -- and in places exceed -- the capabilities of the competing stacks in question.

We also need a hill to take, in order to scope and focus our efforts. Recently we saw the pdf.js project expose small gaps that needed filling in order for "HTML5" to be a superset of PDF. We want to take a bigger step now, and find the gaps that keep web developers from being able to build apps that are -- in every way -- the equals of native apps built for the iPhone, Android, and WP7.

650px-B2G-processes

User space process architecture

To that end, we started a project we’re calling Firefox OS, formerly Boot to Gecko (B2G), to pursue the goal of building a complete, standalone operating system for the open web. It requires work in a number of areas:

  • New web APIs: build prototype APIs for exposing device and OS capabilities to content (Telephony, SMS, Camera, USB, Bluetooth, NFC, etc.)
  • Privilege model: making sure that these new capabilities are safely exposed to pages and applications
  • Booting: prototype a low-level substrate for mobile devices (phones and tablets)
  • Applications: choose and port or build apps to prove out and prioritize the power of the system.

We will do this work in the open, we will release the source in real-time, we will take all successful additions to an appropriate standards group, and we will track changes that come out of that process. We aren't trying to have these native-grade apps just run on Firefox, we're trying to have them run on the web. Read more about the Firefox OS at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/b2g

THE WATCH: JUMPSTREET’S JONAH HILL IN ANOTHER OUTRAGEOUS COMEDY

After debuting in the comedy “I Heart Huckabees,” Jonah Hill has steadily posited himself as a solid hilarious support in the string of his movies that followed. Appearing afterwards in acclaimed hits like “The 40-Year Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up,” “Superbad,” “Forgettting Sarah Marshall,” “Get Him to the Greek,” “Moneyball” and the most recent “21 Jump Street” with Channing Tatum which is Hill’s highest grossing film after “Superbad.”

THE WATCH

Jonah Hill & Ben Stiller in ‘’THE WATCH’’

His latest movie “The Watch” which is about to open in cinemas this September 5 (in Phils. cinemas) allowed him to work with Ben Stiller, one of moviedom’s great comic talents. In “The Watch,” four suburban guys formed a patrol which they tagged as ‘Neighborhood Watch’ after a mysterious incident left a security guard lifeless in the town’s superstore Costco. Headed by the civic minded Evan (Ben Stiller), he recruits fun-loving family guy Bob (Vince Vaughn), tough-talking ‘wild card’ Franklin (Jonah Hill) and the recent divorcé Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade).

Even with – or maybe because of – their spiffy new “Watch” jackets, which are emblazoned with fiery wings and a tiger head, the not-so-fearsome foursome initially gets no respect from the residents they’re supposedly looking out for. A group of kids plaster them with eggs, and the local cops think they’re a joke: the Hardy Boys…only far less savvy.

THE WATCH

Jonah Hill in THE WATCH

“When they formed this ‘band of brothers’, the guys thought, sure, they might encounter some weird neighborhood stuff – maybe a burglar here, or peeping tom there – but suddenly they realize they’ve facing something extraordinary,” says producer Shawn Levy, the director of such hits as “Night at the Museum” and “Real Steel.” “And The Watch is not just unprepared or unqualified, it’s not remotely equipped to deal with this problem; yet it’s all on them to stop it.”

THE WATCH

THE WATCH - Jonah Hill

The youngest member of the team is Franklin (Jonah Hill), a twenty something, militant looking tough guy with, notes Schaffer “a sweetness just underneath.” (He still lives at home with his mom.) Franklin has a planet-size chip on his shoulder because he’s been rejected as a candidate for the police force and all other law enforcement organizations. So for Franklin, The Watch is the only way he can legally kick ass and take names. “Franklin is alienated from, well everything,” says Hill. “He’s very strange and very funny.”

THE WATCH movie

THE WATCH movie

Coming off his Oscar®-nominated performance in the drama “Moneyball,” and executive producing and starring in the critically-hailed hit “21 Jump Street,” Hill was not looking to return to the kind of raucous comedy that had propelled him to superstardom (like “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express”), but he “couldn’t resist the chance to perform opposite alongside Ben, Vince and Richard,” notes the actor.

“It was something I had to do.” Moreover, “if I was going to do another broad comedy, I wanted it to have no basis in reality, and portray a character that could say or do anything. Plus, anytime you put an extreme amount of danger in the hands of irresponsible people, you know the results are going to be really wild.”

More of Jonah Hill and the movie in this interactive trailer of “The Watch” http://www.youtube.com/thewatchintl.

“The Watch” is a 20th Century Fox movie to be distributed by Warner Bros. in local cinemas (Sept. 5).

New MICHELIN tire technology helped make London’s public bus system safer

1

Michelin, the pioneering brand in electronic tire development, made London’s public bus transits safe and ready for the summer Olympics crowd, with tires equipped with Michelin’s latest innovation in tire technology. Called Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chips, the new technology allows for quick, safe and efficient evaluation of tire conditions.

pneu_Michelin_RFID

The new “communicating” tires provide a breakthrough solution to improving road safety. Combining the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and RFID chips installed in the tire, the device helps check the tire pressure and conditions and link to a data processing system. After seven years of thorough testing and research plus thousands of manufactured chips that validate test phases, the technology was introduced to 85% of London’s city buses in time for the 30th Olympic Games.

The small RFID chips require no batteries and instead are activated by the radio waves it receives during scanning. The users may input their own data and update them as well. It can last longer than the tire itself, shave time in vehicle maintenance and provide cost-efficient vehicle operations.

Tower-bridge

With Michelin’s “communicating” tires, the transit operators only need to use an electronic reader that automatically gathers information about the tire’s condition and history. Now, instead of physical check-ups that may be dangerous to the operators, a more reliable system of monitoring tire conditions guarantee that the passenger vehicle tires will last longer, be more accurately traceable, reduce fuel consumption and avoid the need for frequent and costly replacements.

The Michelin Group: A major player in the British urban transport system

The figures speak for themselves. With 33,000 buses covered by service contracts (representing 80% of the country’s bus market) and a 100% market share for four of the five largest British bus transport companies and a 50% share for the fifth, Michelin is eminently qualified to provide bus fleets with end-to-end tire management solutions.

What’s more, 85% of all London buses are fitted with MICHELIN tires. More than just buses, these highly original vehicles – with their bright red color so well-liked by tourists – play both a symbolic and an indispensable role in urban mobility and at the same time are rightly considered to be one of the city’s cultural assets

Keep clothes clean and dry in the rain

Don’t let the gloomy weather get to you. The rainy season, which is in full swing, often brings a lot of worries along with thunder and storms. Rain has a way of affecting everything in our lives, including the clothes we wear.

iStock_000012264299Medium

Not letting damp laundry dry completely make garments smell foul and musty. Worse, the moisture in the clothes can be breeding places for bacteria, which can cause allergies and other ailments.

Luckily, Stanhome World, the No. 1 Direct-Selling company in the European Union, is committed to finding simple solutions to save everyday problems like rainy season laundry. Here are some easy tips that will ensure your laundry smells fresh and clean no matter what the weather.

1. Make sure you use clean water to wash your clothes.

2. Always apply soap or detergent evenly on the fabric.

3. Rinse clothes thoroughly, until soap bubbles are no longer visible.

4. Use fabric conditioner to make sure your clothes stay soft and sweet-smelling.

5. Hang laundry indoors to make sure the clothes don’t get rained on.

6. Iron clothes as soon as you can. Don’t bundle them up for a long time or they might lose the freshness of their just washed scent.

HAVE YOU FED YOUR BRAIN LATELY?

Have you ever wondered what happens to the food we eat every day? Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from our diet help to nourish our body, passing through blood vessels to our internal organ and skin.

But how about our brain, our body’s nerve center, and the main organ that controls the body’s activities? The human brain is made up of about 100 billion neurons or nerve cells. Each neuron functions by receiving and conveying signals to other neurons. Like the other cells in your body, the brain cells need energy to function properly. If we are to feed our body with all essential nutrients to keep it in tip-top shape, we also cannot neglect the brain for it to remain healthy.

photo 1

Just like our body, the brain experiences strain every day from many lifestyle factors, with stress being a major culprit. Chronic cumulative stress of normal everyday life can cause a gradual decline in the levels of a particular brain chemical known as serotonin. Healthy levels of serotonin are required for the brain neurons to communicate with each other, improving its ability to perform at its peak. Suppression of serotonin levels is associated with poor memory, depression, anxiety, fatigue and sleep problems.

Given these scenarios, it is important to always keep our brain not just healthy but also fit at the same time. A healthy brain is free from diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease while keeping the brain fit improves its ability to perform at its peak and maintaining it this way for as long as possible.

Scientists at the BRAND’s® Brain Research Center have recently discovered two peptides, Carnosine and ProBeptigen found in BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken which help to keep the brain healthy and fit. A special manufacturing process extracts these two peptides from chicken and makes them as a health food drink to complement one’s diet and nourishes the brain.

Carnosine protects our brain against cellular damage that accumulates as we age, keeping our brains healthy and free from diseases. Absorption of Carnosine into our bodies is best in the morning. Dr Paramjeet Singh, Chief Scientist and Head of BRAND’s® Brain Research Center says: “You may want to take BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken after breakfast or mid-morning to reap optimal benefits.” Researches also showed that Carnosine can suppress secondary complications of diabetes, cancer and other age-related concerns for the brain. The other peptide ProBeptigen®, sustains serotonin levels in the brain. It promotes brain fitness so that peak performance is possible, even when one is under stress.

photo 2

BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken was discovered in 1835 by Henderson William Brand in order to reverse the failing health of King George IV. With over 176 years of heritage, BRAND’S® has earned the loyalty of many. In the health food industry BRAND’S® has pioneered in investing on scientific and clinical research to prove its product benefits and investigate the mechanisms behind how the products work.

BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken is a health food drink that is free of fat, cholesterol and preservatives. It is an extract of fine quality chicken in easily digestible form and hygienically processed under high temperature that gives it a unique flavor and is best consumed when chilled.

BRAND’S® Essence of Chicken is sold at Mercury Drug stores and is available in 42g and 70g bottles. For more details, visit www.brandsworld.com.

RUBY SPARKS: REAL-LIFE SWEETHEARTS PAUL DANO & ZOE KAZAN TACKLE SURREAL LOVE

“Ruby Sparks” is the story of a novelist’s vision who inexplicably comes to life, only to prove far more complicated than even he could have imagined. With a light touch and a dash of magical realism, the first screenplay from actress and playwright Zoe Kazan attracted the attention of Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, the married team who directed the run-away hit “Little Miss Sunshine.” The film takes an unpredictable route into fantasy, identity and the ways we invent love – and how love can re-invent us.

_DSC2780.NEF

ZOE KAZAN and PAUL DANO in RUBY SPARKS

Paul Dano plays Calvin, a celebrated author in his younger years who hasn’t had a follow up novel years after his first breakthrough novel. Struggling with writer’s block, disappointed and unfulfilled, his close relationships are with his dog and his brother. Calvin who is cut off and isolated is constantly being urged by his married brother Harry (Chirs Messina) to get out, live, date and write. Finally finding in his imagination a muse for his novel and with his old typewriter, he creates the perfect girl he named Ruby. Barely done with his first chapter, to his astonishment that his character, Ruby (Zoe Kazan) has magically sprung to life and arrived in his kitchen where she is cooking eggs.

Life changed as Calvin believes that he willed the perfect woman into his life by the sheer power of his imagination. Ruby leaps off the page and into the kitchen of his house, filling it with her warm and joyful personality. Is he hallucinating? Is this a fantasy? Or is the lovely Ruby Sparks a flesh and blood girl: the girl he has been waiting for? Whether real or imaginary the delightful Ruby turns into a muse who helps Calvin rekindle his passion for writing and his passion for life.

Joining the incredibly talented couple Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,”“There Will Be Blood”) and Kazan (“Revolutionary Road,” “It’s Complicated”) in the movie are Annette Bening who plays Calvin’s free-spirited hippy mother and Antonio Banderas plays her artistic and flamboyant lover.

LIAM NEESON BACK IN “TAKEN 2”

Shot in Istanbul, Turkey and directed by Olivier Megaton , “Taken 2” reunites Liam Neeson with his co-stars Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace in this rocket-paced action sequel that rivals some of the greatest gun-handlers in cinema history.

liam neeson in TAKEN2

Neeson reprises the role of Bryan Mills, a father and an estranged husband who would do anything for his family in the movie. Mills’ daughter having been kidnapped the first time. But he faces a different kind of conflict in “Taken 2.” Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge, and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and then systematically take out the kidnappers one by one.

“In the first movie he's really a guy with nothing to lose. He's divorced, he's lost his daughter, and you see his reaction when she's kidnapped,” explains Megaton. “In this movie, he's got that relationship back and he's even flirting with his ex-wife. It's almost cheesy, but that makes him all the more human at the beginning of the movie, because he's not thinking about his training, he's thinking about his family.”

liam_neeson in TAKEN2

But being kidnapped once is unfortunate; twice is just careless. Rest assured, then, that things play out differently in this sequel. “The powers-that-be–namely our gracious leader Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen—have come up with a much better plot than that,” assures Grace. “Someone has the notion of attempting to abduct Bryan. It's a personal vendetta; someone bent on extracting recompense from a man with a particular set of skills, as ill-advised as that might be. So it's not a random second abduction of my character, Kim, which I think would be everyone's first concern.”

“Taken 2” opens October in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

But when the guys’ patrol vehicle hits something that leaves behind a trail of green goo and a tentacle of some sort, and they find a strange, bowling ball-like device that emits a concentrated beam of energy – they realize that their little group has stumbled onto something bigger than a prowler on the loose.

To play the four members of “The Watch,” Levy and director Akiva Schaffer (a creative force on several famed “Saturday Night Live” short films) tapped three comedy icons and a fast-rising talent. “We wanted the best,” says Levy,” and so we went out and got the best – three titans …together in the same movie! And then we threw in the ‘grenade’ of ‘what the hell are you going to get with Richard Ayoade?’”

THE WATCH

The Watch

Beyond the hilarity lies a story about four guys who were not complete, or their best selves, until they joined forces. As Bob admits to Evan: “You took a ragtag group of misfits and taught us there was something bigger than a few beers and some bro-time. You taught us about community and how important it is.”

At its core, “The Watch” is a story with universal appeal, “It’s about four regular guys who might remind you of your brother, dad or husband,” Levy sums up. “Suddenly, they come together to battle something they have absolutely no clue how to deal with.”

And when it comes to friendship, marriage, career, family – or protecting the world – it’s always best to watch out for one another.

“The Watch” opens September 5 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

BEN STILLER VS. ALIENS IN “THE WATCH”

In the upcoming Ben Stiller starrer comedy “The Watch,” what started out as a simple advocacy by four suburban dads to protect their neighborhood becomes a global concern when they discover that aliens from another have started to inhabit the earth right at their own backyard.

Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn reunite in “Neighborhood Watch” along with Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade (whose name is fast becoming a household name for his work in the British TV show “The IT Crowd”).

Ben plays Evan, a man who moves from the big city to the suburbs, and worries that his life will be boring now he’s away from the excitement of the metropolis. But after signing up for the local neighborhood watch patrol, he’s soon thrust into uncovering a massive conspiracy on the world’s total annihilation.

WebGeek DevCup:2012

Time is running out! If you consider joining as a team or individual to the “WebGeek DevCup” hackathon, then make sure to sign up today! The registration deadline is August 15, 2012 (11pm). WebGeek DevCup will take place on August 25, 2012 at Meralco Mutli-Purpose Hall, Ortigas Center.

WebGeek DevCup is inspired by the hack days of companies such as Facebook and Google. In a traditional hackathon, software developers collaborate outside of the usual corporate constraints in compressed time frames “Hackathon is about moving fast and getting stuff done” and usually fueled by pizza and energy drinks to solve a problem. For years, hackathons have been like the “American Idol for programmers” according to Wired.com – exploding in popularity and easily becoming a venue for companies and venture capitalists where new technologies and software are developed, and as a location for scouting innovation and funding.

To make the best of the event we recommend you to join us at Pre-DevCup Meetup on August 16 (Thursday) at Saguijo Cafe Bar 7612 Guijo Street San Antonio Village, Makati.

We’re throwing a WebGeek Pre-DevCup Meetup for everyone to get acquainted beforehand. Bring your questions and find out more about the hackathon rules, and meet other participants, judges and organizers.

webgeek-devcup-poster-web

Participants will be given six hours to develop a web application based on the prescribed theme to be given on the event itself. At the end of the allotted time, the finished web apps will be presented to the panel of judges that consist of seasoned gurus in the fields of web application development and program management. Those who emerge victorious will win fantastic prizes!

Who are qualified to join WebGeek DevCup, you ask? As long as you have the knowledge and the skills to create a fully-functional web application, then you are welcome to take part in the hackathon! You can go solo, form a duo or trio, and register until August 23, 2012. A registration fee of Php250 (individual), Php500 (2 team members), or Php750 (3 team members) will be collected through Eventbrite

Primed for Growth: Roberts AIPMC's full range of Tiger Leaf springs delivers strong, durable performance to a diverse, loyal clientele

MANILA, Philippines—Rarely does it happen that a vehicle owner, manufacturer, mechanic, or service dealer makes a profession of loyalty to a car part—much less to one hidden under a vehicle’s frame. But a brand of leafsprings developed by Roberts Automotive and Industrial Parts Manufacturing Corporation (Roberts AIPMC) has set an entire industry abuzz as it received nods of acclaim and approval from a rapidly growing clientele both in the Philippines and abroad.

Picture1

Tiger Leaf springs was launched by Roberts AIPMC in 1994 under the same German brand that served Europe for over 120 years. Since then, Tiger has not only established itself as the country's leading line of leaf springs; it has also expanded to include conventional multi-leaf to parabolic (mono-leaf) types, each built to outlast the lifespan of a vehicle. Stamped with cutting-edge technology, strengthened by a world-class manufacturing process, designed with rock-solid durability and heavy-duty power, these leaf springs deliver the kind of enhanced performance suspension that customers are looking for, as well as a reliable, comfortable ride no matter how rough the road, or how heavy the load.

Leaf springs, or molye in Tagalog, serve as one of the most commonly used vehicle suspension technologies today. Taking the form of slender, arc-shaped spring steels, typically attached between the frame and axle of a car, these parts help spread load more widely over the vehicle's chassis—thus ensuring steering stability, easy handling, and maximum passenger comfort.

Picture2

While leaf springs are meant to bend, flatten, extend, then return to their original shape, some easily falter under the weight of an overloaded vehicle; others deteriorate quickly after weeks, months, years of use; still others buckle simply under the stress of tough terrains and rough roads. In each case, the affected system parts pop, squeak, bounce, or clunk—exhibiting all the sounds and symptoms of poor, faulty suspension.

Roberts AIPMC distinguishes itself from the competition by making sure that none of the above happens, and by making Tiger Leaf springs as strong and as durable as possible. The process begins at the company's state-of-the-art 1,300-sqm. manufacturing plant at the Canlubang Industrial Estate in Cabuyao, Laguna, where each Tiger Leaf spring is manufactured from imported raw materials and developed to meet the international standards of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Picture3

Fatigue tests determine the durability, elasticity, and fatigue life of leaf spring assemblies; hardness tests, meanwhile, ensure that the leaves have been properly manipulated by the heat treatment process and hardened for maximum strength. Shot peening, a process in which steel shots are propelled at the tension side of each leaf, is also performed to increase the fatigue life of the springs and smoothen the surface of the leaves. And to verify that all the component parts, materials, and base fixings are fit for the application and vehicle for which the leaf springs are designed, load tests are performed. Throughout all these processes and tests, Roberts AIPMC conducts rigid quality control inspections, which are always guided by the company's ISO 9001:2008-certified quality management system. Tiger Leaf springs are further backed up by excellent after-sales services, delivered by a specialized support group formed to respond to the various needs of Roberts AIPMC customers.

Picture4

It is thus hardly a surprise that Tiger is the only leaf springs brand trusted by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines, Toyota Motors, Isuzu Philippines Corporation, Nissan/Universal Motors Corporation (manufacturer and distributor of Nissan light utility vehicles) and Pilipinas Hino, among many others in Roberts AIPMC's list of OEM clients. More and more individual vehicle owners, mechanics, and service dealers are also recognizing the value-driven performance of world-class Tiger Leaf Springs.

Tiger Leaf springs are currently manufactured at a rate of approximately 600 tons a month. The rare loyalty that the brand has won, however, makes Tiger primed for even bigger growth: something that, judging by the way its leaf springs work, Roberts AIPMC will also be more than equipped to handle.
