“A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD” TOPS PHILS. BOX-OFFICE AT P45.5 MILLION”

Bruce Willis’ highly-explosive actioner “A Good Day To Die Hard” spiraled at the top of the local (Phils.) box-office with a total of P45.5 million on its opening weekend (Feb. 13-17).

The fifth installment of the blockbuster “Die Hard” series has shattered (local) records making it the Biggest Opening Weekend of all Die Hard movies and has now climbed up as this year’s Biggest Opening Weekend for a Fox film so far surpassing the highly-acclaimed “Life of Pi” by Ang Lee (released in January).

As evidenced by its opening weekend box-office, the fifth installment of the Die Hard series packed in a hefty volume of the movie going public who flocked into theaters to enjoy the wild and unbelievable action scenes with cars and choppers explosively flying all over the film’s new setting in Moscow.

With its high-octane action series, “A Good Day to Die Hard” is best viewed on the big screen - Ayala Cinemas’ Trinoma theater recorded highest at P2.24 million that drove in 11,354 admissions over the movie’s opening weekend, followed by SM Mall of Asia at P1.98 million in receipts. KOREAN FILMMAKER PARK CHAN-WOOK DIRECTS HIS FIRST ENGLISH MOVIE – “STOKER”

Chan-Wook – who goes by the name Director Park on set – is one of the most celebrated and popular filmmakers in Korea, his work known for its very precise framing and violent subject matter. His earliest films were not a huge success, and he initially supplemented his income as a film critic. It was 2000’s "Joint Security Area" that would help him break through, and by 2004 he’d won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for "Oldboy." Director – and fan – Quentin Tarantino, as head judge, personally pushed for him to also be awarded the Palme d’Or.

Filmmaker Park Chan-Wook has created a singular body of work during his more than 20 years as a writer, director and producer of some of Korean cinema’s most innovative and original movies, crafting feverish scenarios that combine lyrical beauty with shattering acts of violence and operatic emotion. “Stoker” is a dark and disturbing thriller about a mysterious and isolated American family. Even the film’s title makes metaphorical allusion to evil, invoking the name of Dracula author Bram Stoker, whose groundbreaking novel is as much about an opportunist who preys on the innocent as it is the supernatural world of the vampire.

Best known for his “The Vengeance Trilogy” in his native South Korea – including 2003’s critically lauded Oldboy – director, screenwriter and producer Park Chan-Wook tackles his first American movie with “Stoker.” He continued to have great success – three of his movies are in the thirty highest grossing films of all time in South Korea – and continued to push boundaries: his 2011 film Paranmanjang was shot entirely on an iPhone.

Now he brings his incredible talents for the first time to the States, directing a script by former “Prison Break” star Wentworth Miller. Stoker follows the story of India Stoker (Wasikowska), whose father dies in an auto accident. Soon after, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Over the past two decades, Park Chan-Wook has established a rotating troupe of actors with whom he works regularly in Korea. He has developed an intensely collaborative method of working hand-in-hand with his favorite performers to flesh out and fully define the unusual and original characters that people his films. For his first American movie, he had to put together a new creative family of actors with the same kind of sensitivity, intelligence and talent.

“I am especially excited for audiences to see this film for the performances by these wonderful actors,” says the director. “They are each at different stages of their lives and careers, and are rather different kinds of actors from each other. Seeing how they come together so successfully is worth experiencing.”

Park’s extensive preparation makes it easier for him to shoot quickly and precisely. “My style of filmmaking involves very specific camera movements,” he explains. “I edit the film in my head well in advance, so working in the conventional manner, with long masters and lots of coverage, does not work for me.”

The film’s shooting schedule was abbreviated compared to the customary pace in Korea, which also affected the way the camera was used. “Having to capture the scenes so quickly made it difficult to use the long elaborate camera movements I am known for,” Park says. “But this may have a better effect on the film. When such shots are used only in the most memorable way, it increases the tension.”

“Stoker” is a fitting addition to Park’s acclaimed canon of work, according to producer Costigan. “Like all of Director Park’s films, it is primal, but also poetic and human. It’s about overwhelming emotion and its intersection with violence. He was able to craft Wentworth Miller’s riveting script into something even scarier, surprising, beautiful and lush, even funny at times. Everyone involved with the film feels very proud to have been able to help director Park make a true ‘Park Chan-Wook film’ in America.”

Master storyteller and filmmaker Steven Spielberg whose works span and engage all ages as seen in “Jurassic Park,” War of the Worlds,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Schindler’s List,” “Empire of the Sun,” “Jaws” and “ET,” creates a never-before-seen perspective of America’s most beloved president in “Lincoln” as played by Daniel Day-Lewis, two-time Academy Award winner and this year’s Best Actor at the Golden Globe Awards for his portrayal of Lincoln.

Spielberg creates a gripping historical thriller during a brief time in history when Abraham Lincoln is at both the pinnacle and bottom of his career as a nation’s leader. However, we wanted to show that he himself was a man, not a monument. We felt our best hope of doing justice to this immensely complicated person was to depict him in the midst of his most complex fight: to pass the 13th Amendment on the floor of the House of Representatives.”

“My movies more often are told through pictures, not words. But in this case, the pictures took second position to the incredible words of Abraham Lincoln and his presence,” Spielberg explains. “With ‘Lincoln,’ I was less interested in an outpouring of imagery than in letting the most human moments of this story evolve before us.”

In stripping Lincoln’s final days down to their most electrifying yet stark moments of debate, political machinations, family ties and private fears and hopes, Spielberg and Kushner uncovered the gripping—and unpredictably human—nature of a democracy’s greatest battle in action. “The film does have quite a bit of suspense,” he notes, “and it could, at times, even be seen as a kind of political thriller.”

Longtime Spielberg producing partner Kathleen Kennedy agrees that the film takes an interesting turn in the ongoing evolution of the director’s career. “Steven has always loved history and has made many movies with a historical context—and I think he recognized that some of the most interesting characters came from history,” she observes. “But Steven knew that with ‘Lincoln,’ he wouldn’t create a conventional biopic. Instead, he and Tony attempted to find the most intimate way to show the power of Lincoln’s achievements as President, through the exploration of the end of slavery and other key events that took place during his presidency.”

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS’ ILLUMINATION OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST IN HISTORY IN “LINCOLN”

Academy-Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis (“My Left Foot,” “There Will Be Blood”) is also this year’s Academy-award nominee frontrunner for his titular role in the Steven Spielberg-directed movie “Lincoln.”

Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Steven Spielberg’s powerful drama, “Lincoln,” which focuses on the last four months in the life of the 16th President of the United States. During this pivotal period, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and ended the Civil War that had ravaged the country and taken an estimated 750,000 lives. With an astonishing performance from Day-Lewis and masterful direction by Spielberg, a portrait emerges of a political genius who was also a moral visionary and a warm, compassionate man.

Daniel Day-Lewis plays Abraham Lincoln, the far-sighted American president known as ‘The Great Emancipator’ and widely regarded as the most influential statesman of the 19th century. Lincoln is determined to free the slaves, even if it means prolonging the Civil War and Steven Spielberg’s momentous new film delivers fresh and fascinating insights into the brilliant leader, explaining how the path to emancipation was fraught with complexity.

“Lincoln” explains how the President engages in backroom deals, patronage and political machinations in order to secure the passage of the all-important 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the measure that officially ended the evils of human bondage. He directs the war effort toward the destruction of slavery with insight and political mastery, deliberately prolonging the war and delaying peace negotiations as he tries to build a bipartisan consensus in the House of Representatives.

Bearing a remarkable resemblance to the 16th President, Daniel Day-Lewis gives a wonderfully measured and nuanced performance as Lincoln. With his impassioned portrayal of abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens, Tommy Lee Jones offers up the performance of a lifetime. Sally Field is equally impressive as Lincoln’s highly intelligent but troubled wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. William Seward, Lincoln’s former rival who becomes the President’s greatest supporter, is masterfully played by David Strathairn. The formidably talented cast includes Joseph Gordon Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, John Hawkes, Jackie Earle Haley, Bruce McGill, Tim Blake Nelson, Joseph Cross, Jared Harris and Lee Pace.

Like many people, Day-Lewis was initially familiar with Lincoln only in broad strokes, mostly through speeches like The Gettysburg Address. “But as a human being, I had little sense of him whatsoever until I began to learn,” he says. The screenplay kicked off the learning process. “In a very rich way, (screenwriter) Tony suggested the man through his intellect, his humor and his melancholy, both domestically and in office. The contrast between those two things is something that’s like food and drink to me. In Tony’s script you see a man in that strange paradox of being both public and private.”

He then undertook an intimate engagement with “Team of Rivals” from which the movie was in part based as well as many other writings about and by Lincoln. But this gave way to something more organic. “Doris’ book was a great beginning,” Day-Lewis says. Another key to Lincoln became what Day-Lewis calls “the rhythm of the man.” He explains: “He did everything at his own pace and could only do it at his own pace. He needed to arrive at his decisive conclusions by a logical process that he relied on. What looked to others like inaction or paralysis was just the physical impression that he gave. In his own mind he was traveling as he needed to do, through each step of the process, after which he could see things clearly.”

Indeed, production designer Rick Carter recalls a feeling of tumbling through time when Day-Lewis first came to the set: “I haven’t gotten over the first time I saw him,” muses Carter. “Daniel Day-Lewis was not who I saw in front of me. I saw the man who was the President of the United States in 1865. I saw Abraham Lincoln. I didn’t see any distinction or gap between them.”

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT IN THE ACADEMY-AWARD NOMINATED FILM "LINCOLN"

Joseph Gordon-Levitt now also known as JGL in Hollywood jargon whose recent role in "The Dark Knight Rises" started people talking about a spin off movie on Robin is on a roll after his strong screen presence as the masked crusader's loyal ally. From his other previous works spanning various film genres such as "500 Days of Summer," "Looper," "Premium Rush," "Inception" and "A River Runs Through It" now comes his most notable role in the Steven Spielberg-directed Academy-award nominated thrilling epic "Lincoln."

JGL forms part of an Award-Winning cast in "Lincoln" headed by Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. The movie focuses on the last four months of Abraham Lincoln, illuminating the man as a political genius, as an anguished family man and, most of all, as a courageous defender of the United States of America.

A rich human drama plays out as Lincoln doubles down to end the devastating Civil War not merely by ending the war but by fighting to pass the 13th Amendment, permanently abolishing slavery. It will be an act of true national daring. He will have to call upon all the skill, courage and moral fortitude for which he’ll become legend. In condensing the last four months of Lincoln's life, the filmmakers felt it imperativie to expound on the Lincoln marriage as well which was put under further stress by the desire of their oldest son, Robert, to join the Union Army and make his own contribution to the war effort. At 21 and a promising Harvard student, Robert Lincoln didn’t have to go war like so many young men, yet he felt compelled to be part of this historic moment. His parents felt otherwise. Knowing the staggering mortality rate and still reeling from the death of their son Willie, both tried to keep him a civilian in their own ways.

Portraying the president’s oldest son (and the only Lincoln child to survive to adulthood) is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He tried to place himself into Bob Lincoln’s dilemma. “Being privileged, I think Bob knows he is fortunate—because who wants to fight in this war where so many are dying?” says Gordon-Levitt. “At the same time, because of his circumstances, he’s been taken out of what’s happening in the country. And that’s tough for him because he also really believes in the cause of this war, believes in the rights of human beings, and that makes him want to fight.”

Like Field, Gordon-Levitt first communicated with Daniel Day-Lewis in a more 21st century manner: via texting. “It was a little bizarre to be texting with someone that I’ve idolized all my life,” he muses. “But it was a delight. He is such a sweet and generous guy with his words. It really meant a lot when he said,‘You're my first choice of who I want to do this.’”

Gordon-Levitt says that one of his greatest gratifications was bringing out the more fallible side of Lincoln’s character, a side many have never seen. “I like that this movie doesn’t turn Lincoln into a saint,” he says. “What he accomplished in abolishing slavery was a truly great thing; but this movie also shows the compromises he had to make, the things that he had to do that were questionable in order to accomplish that goal. Bob is a good example of that because he really never was able to have much of a relationship with his father. That was a big sacrifice and showed how complicated Lincoln’s life was. History is made by human beings and I like that this story portrays Lincoln as a human being with personal flaws and hypocrisies as well as real strengths and virtues.”

Gordon-Levitt felt a similar effect with Sally Field. “We were realistic towards each other, calling each other ‘Mom’ and ‘Son’ and things like that. I know that might sound weird to an outsider but when you play things that real, everything becomes more genuine,” he summarizes.

AUSSIE ACTOR JAI COURTNEY DOUBLES THE ACTION AND THRILL IN “A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD”

“A Good Day To Die Hard” sets up Bruce Willis to reconnect with his long estranged son Jack played by Jai Courtney where he finally tracks him down in Moscow involved in an undercover assignment to pin down the masterminds of a potentially disastrous crime.

Willis’ John McClane arrives in Moscow and learns that Jack, far from being a criminal, is a CIA operative, three years into an undercover mission to protect a Russian thief-turned-whistleblower, Komarov (Sebastian Koch). Having grown a conscience, Komarov is determined to testify against a former partner and thwart his ambitions for higher political office.

The role of Jack McClane went to young Australian actor Jai Courtney, who co-starred in the 2010 season of the series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” and as Tom Cruise’s fearsome adversary in “Jack Reacher.” “I auditioned a couple of times for the role of Jack McClane, and of course wasn’t expecting anything to come of it,” Jai recalls, “because I knew they were casting a really wide net. I had just wrapped Jack Reacher in Pittsburgh, and was homebound to Sydney. Literally, I was walking down the jet way to my connecting flight at LAX when my agent called and said, don’t leave – they want you to read with Bruce! I did a test with him a week later, and some time afterwards got the good news. It’s been a fantastic experience. Bruce is one of those guys I grew up watching on screen and the Die Hard franchise is so iconic.”

Adds Willis: “Jai got the character and he just seemed like family – like a McClane.” And director John Moore notes that, “Jai brings an intelligence and suaveness to the character. But he’s also a much more physical presence than we initially envisaged for Jack. But once Jai auditioned, we said, let’s go with the big guy because he’s right for the role.”

As the son of New York’s most famous cop, Courtney’s Jack proves that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. He displays his father’s sense of duty, courage and willingness to place his life in danger to protect others. “Jack has been living as a Russian, speaking the language, and infiltrating different groups to try to get to the bottom of the disastrous heist,” says Courtney. “He’s shocked when his dad arrives at a crucial moment and blows his cover. He doesn’t want his help; in fact he wants nothing to do with him. Jack is determined to prove he can do this on his own terms and that he’s his own man.”

Under a hail of gunfire, the McClanes manage a desperate escape, and must regroup to figure out how to get to rescue Komarov, who is now in the hands of the group Jack is after. Jack McClane is out of answers, and must turn to John for help. Says Jai Courtney: “Jack takes a methodical approach to his work, probably out of a backlash to his father’s knack for winging it and hoping for the best. But he’s now in a situation where there’s no book to guide him, he has no answers and is at the breaking point. His dad’s instincts are to never quit, regardless of the cost, and in this terrible situation Jack sees that very clearly - maybe for the first time. It gives Jack deeper insight and respect for John’s values. It’s a turning point.”

“This is a father-son story in which they are trying to complete a dangerous mission while also attempting to mend a fractured relationship,” says Wyck Godfrey. “Jack’s first reaction is, Get out of here, dad, I don’t need your help. But what he really wants is to hear his father say, you’re doing great, son, I’m proud of you. And that’s the beauty of this story. We’re playing out a relationship drama in the midst of a thrilling Die Hard story.”

Adds executive producer Jason Keller: “John and Jack find themselves off the grid, in deep trouble, with no help. Jack doesn’t know what to do, and his father pulls him back and says that we can do this. And the key moment in the film happens when Jack chooses to swallow his pride and accept John’s help. Now you have two McClanes working together, which is more than our bad guys ever bargained for.”

Box-office actress and producer Sandra Bullock stars in her latest action-comedy in “The Heat” alongside comedic talent Melissa McCarthy as cops and buddies tasked to solve a high profile crime. 20^th Century Fox presents the international trailer of "The Heat"

DreamWorks is set to change the pace in racing when it finally releases “Turbo” in theaters worldwide on July 19 starring the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Snoop Dogg, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz and Samuel L. Jackson.

In “Turbo,” a snail named Theo (voiced by Reynolds) dreams of being the greatest racer in the world making him an oddity in the slow and cautious community he belongs. An impossible dream of an ordinary snail comes true when luck struck him with an incredible speed one fateful day. With his dream suddenly within reach, Theo aka Turbo embarks on a journey after being transported to a rundown strip mall where visitors bet on races featuring snails and meets a ragtag of street-smart snails headed by Whiplash (Samuel L. Jackson), Smoove Move (Snoop Dogg), Burn (Maya Rudolph) and Skidmark (Ben Schwartz).

Based on his own original concept, filmmaker David Soren mentioned in an interview with Susan Wloszczyna of USATODAY.Com that “Turbo” was hatched by combining the fascination of his son with race cars and an ongoing infestation of snails on their suburban lawn. “It came purely out of wanting to do an underdog story and combining elements in my life, taking one of the slowest creatures on earth and having him dream of mind-melting speed.”
